Commensal rodents are rodents that live in close association with humans and depend on humans for their survival. They are typically found in homes, businesses, and other human-made structures. Commensal rodents can be a nuisance and a health hazard, and they can also damage property.

The most common commensal rodents are the house mouse & brown rat, House mice are small, slender rodents with pointed noses and long tails. They are typically grey or brown in colour. Brown rats are larger and heavier than house mice. They have blunt noses and shorter tails.

Commensal rodents are attracted to humans & human-made structures because they provide food, water, shelter, and warmth. They eat a variety of foods, including human food, pet food, and any rubbish they can get hold of. They also drink water from sinks, toilets, and other sources. Commensal rodents build nests in dark, secluded areas, such as lofts, cellers, beneath sheds and many other places. They are active at night and sleep during the day.

Commensal rodents can be a severe issue because they contaminate food and spread disease. They can also damage property by gnawing on wires, pipes, and furniture. Commensal rodents can also carry fleas and ticks, which can transmit diseases to humans and pets.

There are a number of ways to prevent commensal rodents from infesting homes and businesses. These include:

  • Keeping food and rubbish in sealed containers.
  • Repairing any holes or cracks in the foundation or exterior of the building.
